The Liberal Jewish Synagogue (LJS) held a special dedication event in honour of Rabbi Dr David J Goldberg OBE (z’’l) – one of the most important figures in the history of modern Progressive Judaism.

Rabbi David Goldberg

Following introductions from LJS Rabbis Alexandra Wright and Igor Zinkov, four distinguished speakers offered their thoughts: Michael Grade, the Revd Dr Nicholas Sagovsky, Jeremy Lewison and Rabbi Danny Rich.

Each gave fascinating talks on different aspects of Rabbi David’s tremendous legacy, conveying the multi‑faceted man they knew – a man who made Liberal Judaism relevant, compelling and inclusive; a man of wit, courage, innovation and integrity of thought; a brilliant writer; a pioneer of interfaith work; a man who was instrumental in making the rebuilt synagogue a place of beauty.

It was entirely fitting that the main entrance hall of the LJS – which houses the Holocaust Memorial by Sir Anish Kapoor, a work in which Rabbi David had played an active role in commissioning – was then dedicated in his memory. Rabbi Kathleen Middleton officiated as Rabbi David’s widow, Carole Goldberg, unveiled the plaque.

The afternoon was a most moving opportunity to remember with gratitude and affection the life and contribution of Rabbi Dr David J Goldberg.
