One of the most common questions our Liberal Judaism rabbis and staff get asked is how to have a Jewish funeral if you are not a member of Liberal Judaism.
Liberal Judaism is the home for your Jewish story, no matter at what point you find us.
Some people find us towards the end of their life, when they are starting to think about a funeral, and sometimes we are contacted by families after a loved one has died.
We are proud that Liberal Judaism conducts non-member funerals – providing a sympathetic, first class and inclusive Jewish funeral conducted by a Liberal rabbi.
We can help with burial, woodland burial and cremation. We are also able to arrange for couples to be buried together, including for couples where one partner is not Jewish.
Under the auspices of Liberal Judaism, burials of non-members can take place at Edgwarebury Cemetery (Edgware) or The Western Cemetery (Cheshunt) in London. Cremations can take place at any London crematorium. We are also able to assist people outside of London.
Non-Jewish partners of Jewish people may be buried in all Liberal sections at Edgwarebury and in the woodland section at Cheshunt, in both cases providing that the Jewish partner is/will be buried there too in the same plot.
Costs change annually. Currently they are:
- Edgwarebury: Main sections - £15,685
- Cheshunt: Main section - £12,850 | Woodland section: £13,910
(Note: Non-Jewish partners can only currently be buried in the woodland section and lawn at Cheshunt) - Cremation - £4,570
[Please note that these costs are per funeral/burial, rather than for a plot.]
While Liberal Judaism does its utmost to help non-members and their families, the only definite way to guarantee a plot is to join a Liberal Jewish community.
In cases of couples, please note that the family is not purchasing the plot but only the right for the second partner to be buried alongside their loved one – either as a non-member or as a member if he or she decides to become one.
