Midlands Shavuot

More than 110 people, including over 20 young attendees, came together for Shavuot at Nottingham Liberal Synagogue in a celebration of Jewish unity and diversity across the Midlands.

Although joint Liberal Midlands events have taken place in the past, this marked the first time Progressive partners from Reform congregations joined in, making it a milestone in inter-community collaboration.

Members came from Birmingham Progressive, Coventry Reform, Leicester Progressive, Lincoln Liberal, Sheffield Reform and Nottingham Liberal, as well as the Orthodox Nottingham Hebrew Congregation and the independent Derbyshire Jewish Community – embodying a powerful testament to the strength of provincial Jewish life.

The day was a rewarding success, filled with smiling faces and warmth, as new friendships were formed and old connections rekindled.

Paula Scott, President of Nottingham Liberal Synagogue said: “There was a clear appetite for more get togethers like this in the future, laying the foundation for deeper relationships and continued cooperation.

Rachael Phillips, Chair of Lincoln Jewish Community, added: “The event was especially meaningful, bringing people together, making new contacts, and I even reunited with someone I hadn’t seen in over 30 years. It was a moment of joy, history, and hope, proving that the Midlands’ Jewish communities are stronger together.”
