The Sixth Annual Rabbi Harry Martin Jacobi Memorial Lecture was marked by insightful reflection and deep appreciation for Jewish resilience, as Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein delivered an engaging talk exploring the themes of hope, perseverance and faith.
Rabbi Andrew compared the pessimism of the prophet Jeremiah with the optimism of Rabbi Harry Jacobi, drawing parallels between historical struggles and modern-day challenges. His lecture highlighted Rabbi Harry’s unwavering commitment to justice, progress and interfaith understanding, ensuring that his legacy continues to influence current and future generations.
Among those in attendance at Southgate Progressive Synagogue (SPS) were Rabbi Harry’s children, Rabbi Dr Margaret Jacobi, who began proceedings with a prayer, and Rabbi Richard Jacobi, who introduced the speaker, as well as Harry’s grandson Yoni.
Others in the audience included Progressive Judaism Co-Lead Rabbi Josh Levy, Liberal Judaism Chair Karen Newman, Rabbi Danny Newman of SPS, Deputy Mayor of Enfield Cllr Margaret Greer, Cllr Nagus Narenthira and Bambos Charalambous MP.
Speaking afterwards, Rabbi Margaret said: “I was moved by Andrew’s lecture, which skilfully wove the story of Jeremiah with that of my father. Andrew was a colleague of Dad’s for nearly 50 years, and his lecture reflected beautifully their long friendship.”
Reflecting on the event, Rabbi Andrew emphasised the importance of finding strength in these difficult times, urging communities to embrace hope and resilience as guiding principles. His lecture served as both a tribute and a call to action for the Jewish community to acknowledge Rabbi Harry Jacobi’s significant legacy.
