Mosaic Jewish Community held an emotional Shir for Israel in June, as the country came under attack from Iran.
Led with joy and passion by Ivor Goldberg, the evening was filled with songs from Leonard Cohen’s Hallelujah to Adon Olam, sung in four different melodies, as more than 40 attendees journeyed through a medley of Jewish and Israeli music.
As the harmonies filled the room, it focused thoughts on friends and relatives in Israel spending anxious hours in shelters, bracing for missile attacks.
Ivor (pictured) said: “The music was a form of solidarity, a gentle protest against despair, and a testament to resilience.”
Twice during the evening, the Chaveirim got up and danced the hora lifting the mood and reminding everyone of the enduring rhythm of Jewish life.
Though she couldn’t attend, the evening had been organised by Joan Noble. Joan was visiting family in Israel when the war with Iran began and couldn’t get home.
