Members of York Liberal Jewish Community (YLJC) came together with neighbours and friends to celebrate Pride at a special interfaith Erev Shabbat service, held at the York Unitarian Chapel. The uplifting event was organised by YLJC’s Social Action Team.

Led by the community’s Rabbi Elisheva Salamo – who is passionate about building connections – the service was filled with warmth, song and joy. At one point, Rabbi Elisheva even had the whole room dancing.

She said: “Regardless of your circumstances, your identity, your training, or the person you embrace in love… we have a place for you at our table, a bit of challah, and a glass of juice to share with you. Come share your stories. Come in respect. Come with an open heart and an open mind.”

Following the service, guests enjoyed a kiddush, coffee and cake, and were invited to write messages of hope on the community’s own Pride flag.

YLJC Social Action Co-Chair Pete Simms said: “In creating the flag, we’ve shown that YLJC and the LGBTQI+ communities share common goals of hope and resilience.”

Fellow Social Action Team members Sarah Hubbard and Natasha Almond expressed delight at the strong turnout and the chance to connect with colleagues from York’s interfaith and wider community networks.

Owen Power, YLJC’s representative on the Board of Deputies, added: “The service was a great opportunity to send a clear message to trans people that they are welcome. This is especially important now, given the rise in transphobia.”
