Rabbi Charley Baginsky and Rabbi Josh Levy represented Progressive Judaism at yesterday’s service at Westminster Abbey to recognise the 80th anniversary of VE Day and commemorate the sacrifice of the Second World War generation.
Rabbis Josh and Charley were among the faith leaders invited to the thanksgiving event, which was attended by King Charles III, Queen Camilla, the Prince and Princess of Wales and Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, alongside other Royals, senior politicians, veterans, military personnel and youth representatives.
Rabbi Charley said: “It was a very moving occasion and an honour to be part of the procession and service on behalf of our Reform and Liberal communities. It was also personally very special as the first time we have stood together, both representing Progressive Judaism, at such a national event.”
VE (Victory in Europe) Day marked the surrender of the Nazi regime and the end of war in Europe. There has been a week of services and events to celebrate the 80th anniversary, including within our synagogues.
Rabbi Josh said: “It has been a great privilege to honour the generation who contributed so much to defeating the Nazis – both on the front lines and the home front – and renew our commitment to the values of freedom and justice for which they fought.”
