After a distinguished career as a senior judge, His Honour Richard Harper’s supposed retirement has led him to an entirely new role – that of a full-time writer.
Ealing Liberal Synagogue member Richard (pictured with his family) has achieved a remarkable milestone: the simultaneous recent publication of two books, each tackling subjects deeply significant to him and the broader Jewish community.
His latest work, Displacement, published by Arrow Gate Publishing is a groundbreaking study of three eminent Jewish writers – namely Stefan Zweig, Joseph Roth and Walter Benjamin – who were hunted to death by fascism.
Richard said: “Their writing, as well as the tragic drama of their unsuccessful attempts to escape and survive, continue to captivate generations of readers. Until now, no single book has explored these three influential Jewish figures together. With a resurgence of interest in their works in both the UK and the US, I have been actively engaging readers and scholars alike, participating in events such as the Jewish Book Council, and delivering a very well received talk at Kings Place Jewish Book Week.
“It is an intensely Jewish book, shining a light on voices whose insights into exile, identity, and displacement remain profoundly relevant today.”
His second work, published by Routledge, is The Family Court in Practice: A Safeguarding Guide for All Practitioners Working with Children.
Richard said: “This connects my extensive judicial expertise with safeguarding practices, an issue deeply relevant to those working with children including rabbis, cantors, cheder teachers, and community leaders. By bridging legal and communal responsibilities, my aim is to include equipping Jewish institutions with the necessary knowledge to navigate complex family law matters.
“Safeguarding is essential in every facet of community life, including religious spaces. I hope this book serves as a guide for all who work with children and vulnerable individuals.”
With his deep legal experience and literary ambition, His Honour Richard Harper’s journey from the courtroom to the bookshelf continues to inspire.
