Finchley Progressive Synagogue walk raises £15,000

29 April 2025 – 1 Iyyar 5785

Over eight long hours more than 50 members of Finchley Progressive Synagogue (FPS) completed a 40,000-step journey to raise money for their synagogue building project. What began as a fun fundraising suggestion has now secured nearly £15,000 to support the vital renovations.

The FPS building has been undergoing extensive works, made possible by generous donations and grants. The congregation was determined to close the remaining funding gap, leading to the idea of the ‘Walking Home Together’ challenge.

Inspired by the theme of coming home, the group walked from the East End of London back to Finchley, exemplifying the synagogue’s commitment to community and togetherness.

Among the dedicated walkers was Maayan Rabbett, who completed the whole journey. She said: “We’ve all been so supported by Finchley Progressive during our time as members, and our children love the special community we’ve been lucky enough to find. We wanted to help create a special home for our current and future congregations, as well as the other communities and charities we support.”

Leading the charge was Rabbi Rebecca Birk, who emphasised the significance of the event: “Social action and charity are at the heart of Finchley Progressive. At this point, we’ve focused inwards, raising funds so that we can continue to grow as a community, support our congregation, and care for others. We’re thrilled to have raised almost £15,000. It was worth the tired legs and aching feet!”

Finchley Progressive Synagogue not only supports its own congregation, but also is a home for many others. It offers weekly after-school sessions for the children of asylum seekers living in nearby Home Office supported hotels. It hosts the Rainbow Lunch Club, an LGBTQI+ lunch for asylum seekers and refugees. And they are proud to partner with Homeless Action Barnet, the Yaran Women’s Club for Afghani and Farsi-speaking women, the Vulnerable Persons Resettlement Scheme, Hendon School and the Somali Bravames Welfare Association among others.
