President of Liberal Judaism

Liberal Jewish Synagogue

Rabbi Alexandra Wright’s connection with Liberal Judaism goes back to her grandmother, who was an early member of The Liberal Jewish Synagogue (LJS) spellbound by the sermons of Liberal Judaism’s first rabbi, Rabbi Dr Israel Mattuck.

Alexandra grew up at the LJS and, after being ordained at Leo Baeck College in 1986, served the community as associate rabbi under the guidance of Rabbis Dr David J Goldberg and John Rayner, from 1986-1989.

Alexandra moved to Radlett & Bushey Reform Synagogue (now Radlett Reform) in 1990, where she was the sole rabbi for 14 years. She returned to the LJS as senior rabbi in 2004, making history by becoming Britain’s first ever female senior rabbi.

Alexandra is active in the Council of Christians and Jews, has taught classical Hebrew at Leo Baeck College and, for five years, served as the North London Hospice’s Jewish chaplain on their multi-faith chaplaincy team.
