Sixty participants from across the South West gathered in Exeter for an unforgettable weekend: the very first Progressive Judaism South West Chagigah.
This incredible event marked an exciting milestone in the creation of our new Movement, bringing together members and friends from Three Counties, Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, Kernow, Wessex and Totnes communities, as well as others from near and far.
From the moment participants gathered on Friday afternoon, the atmosphere was filled with warmth, ruach (spirit and energy) and connection. Over the weekend we learned together, prayed together, shared delicious meals, and enjoyed plenty of fun, laughter and moments of light-hearted joy.

An inspiring and uplifting Oneg Shabbat led by Rabbi Josh Levy and Rabbi Anna Gerrard
There was a rich and varied programme for everyone. Youngest participants had a weekend packed with activities, lovingly designed and led by a wonderful tzevet from our Progressive youth movements. Adults enjoyed a full and inspiring programme including Shabbat services, engaging talks, Shabbat crafts, walks and visits, and moments of meaningful reflection.
We were delighted to be joined by Rabbi Anna Gerrard of the Three Counties Liberal Jewish Community and Rabbi Josh Levy, Co-Lead of Progressive Judaism, who both helped shape the weekend with insight, inspiration and joy.
Organiser Alexandra Gellnick — Director of Community Partnerships for Liberal Judaism — said: “It was wonderful to see people connecting across communities, forming new friendships, and celebrating the strength and spirit of Progressive Judaism in the South West. There were so many highlights that it’s impossible to choose just one: it truly was all brilliant.”
As one participant told us: “The weekend felt like being part of something bigger: an inspiring celebration of who we are and what we can be together.”
Another added: “I’ve never felt such a sense of connection and joy across our communities, it was inspiring to see everyone learning, praying and celebrating together.”
You can relive some of the magic through listening to Jane Carpenter’s interview about the event on BBC Radio Devon (from 1:48:25).
The first South West Progressive Chagigah was a powerful reminder of the energy, creativity and community spirit thriving across the region. If you were not able to join us this time, we hope you’ll be part of the next one, and share in the joy of building Progressive Judaism together in the South West.
