York Liberal Jewish Community goes spooky for Shabbat

11 November 2025 – 20 Heshvan 5786

Despite the relentless rain, jam packed trains, missing taxis and terrible traffic jams nothing dampened the spirit of York Liberal Jewish Community’s ‘Spooky Shabbat.’

York’s Social Action Committee welcomed a marvellous mix of interfaith guests for an unforgettable evening. Rabbi Elisheva Salamo, true to form, led the singing that echoed throughout the shul, setting the mood for a supernatural themed discussion.

Everyone took the chance to share what the “supernatural” meant to them, making for an interesting thought-provoking exchange of individual experiences and viewpoints.

A delicious buffet supper brought everyone together, hosted by the always enthusiastic Sarah Hubbard the community’s interfaith lead. Behind the scenes, the teamwork of Rabbi Elisheva, Pete, Jay, Sarah, Tash, and Hilary, showed what is possible when community members roll up their sleeves to make a night to remember.

LJ national officer & the community’s Board of Deputies representative Owen Power concluded: “We might have battled the elements to reach the city centre, but the warmth inside York Liberal Jewish Community made our Spooky Shabbat a memorable evening as interfaith, making connections and friendships is so important to us.”
