Liberal Judaism’s Rainbow Jews and Twilight People project manager Surat-Shaan Knan has joined Stonewall’s new Trans Advisory Group. The group will support the integration of trans equality across all of Stonewall’s campaigns and programmes.

It was put together following an extensive application and recruitment process.Members reflect a diverse range of trans voices and experiences, representing a range of ethnic backgrounds, religions, experiences and trans identities.Stonewall chief executive Ruth Hunt said: “Recruiting an advisory group is a vital part of our journey to becoming fully trans inclusive. We’re thrilled to have such a diverse range of experiences and backgrounds in this group to work in partnership with us, and to help ensure that trans issues and voices are cemented in everything we do.

Surat-Shaan added: “It is a true blessing to be selected to serve on this pioneering group. I am keen to represent the voice of trans people of faith, and in particular Progressive Judaism – which has been at the forefront of campaigns for LGBT equality.“Liberal Judaism’s pioneering oral history initiative Twilight People is the first ever heritage project to explore faith and gender identity. It is an honour to see that recognised.

“Stonewall are really highlighting the diversity of voices within the trans community – and I am looking forward to working towards acknowledging our multiple layers of identity.”

Stonewall’s mission is to let all lesbian, gay, bi and trans people, in the UK and abroad, know they are not alone. The appointment of the Trans Advisory Group follows the charity’s announcement in February 2015 that it would extend its remit to campaign for trans equality.
