True community can only exist when all who want to be included are able to join in. Our commitment to accessibility and inclusivity doesn’t just mean that we are committed to making our premises easy to access, but also that we are devoted to making sure that everyone who wants to can find an appropriate and meaningful point of entry into Liberal Jewish life.

Disability Inclusion Seminar at Northwood and Pinner Synagogue on Sunday 11th April 2011

Liberal Judaism will launch hold its first nation seminar on the theme of disability and social inclusion at Northwood and Pinner Synagogue on Sunday 10th April .  The event is being organised by a forum called Kulanu or “All of Us”.   The aims of the seminar are to celebrate the participation of disabled people in all aspects of communal life, and to ensure that our movement sets the standard for inclusive practice.

It is open to all disabled Liberal Jews, people who are caring for a disabled adult or child,   and those who have responsibility for ensuring equal access and inclusion in synagogue life.

There will be study of Biblical and Jewish teaching on disability and sharing of personal experience of disability and inclusion.  We are aiming to have speakers from various disability movements who can inspire us with what can be achieved.

This will be followed by the launch of the (Kaf, Lamed  Nun)  forum : an opportunity for disabled people to meet, support each other and contribute to best practice

The forum will address physical and sensory disabilities, mental health problems, learning disabilities and difficulties as well as hidden disabilities.   We will stress that the solutions lie not only in structural improvements - such as ramped access, induction loops, large print   – but all in changing attitudes and challenging assumptions about disability.

All are welcome to come to Inclusion Seminar and join the Kaf, Lamed, Nun forum. Please contact Leon Charikar, National Board Officer for Social Action and Inclusion, if you would like to know more.  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
