Kent Liberal Jewish Community celebrates a milestone

Kent Liberal Jewish Community (KLJC) was founded in 1991 and celebrates its 13th anniversary this year. The Community decided to mark the occasion by holding a Bat Mitzvah service in Maidstone followed by a celebration buffet lunch.

Rabbis and lay leaders who have conducted services for the Community since its establishment in 1991, joined about 50 congregants, including founder members. His Worship the Mayor of Maidstone, Councillor Peter Hooper, also attend, along with representatives of several different faith groups based in Maidstone and from other Jewish communities in Britain.

Kent Liberal Jewish Community chair, Hazel Bishop, (the Community' s first woman in the honorary post) said: We are delighted to celebrate the Community' s coming of age. It is a joyous occasion and a time to reflect on our growth and development. Thirteen years ago a very disparate group of Jews living in Kent who didn' t know each other met to listen to a proposal from Liberal Judaism' s Outreach Officer. Now we are a vibrant, supporting welcoming community which holds regular services, an annual communal Seder, an active Cheder and a lively social calendar. We look forward to building on these sound foundations.
