The recently created Baroness Neuberger
delivered Liberal Judaism’s annual lecture at the Liberal
Synagogue, St Johns Wood. The lecture was entitled “The
Moral State we are in – why our sense to care for the
most vulnerable is so inadequate.”
Prior to the lecture, a reception was given
by Liberal Judaism to honour Baroness Neuberger. Rabbi Alex
Wright gave a speech paying tribute to Rabbi Dr David Goldstein,
in whose memory the lecture is given, as well as celebrating
Baroness Neuberger’s elevation to the peerage.
She said: “ We are here to honour the memory of one
of the dearest and most gifted rabbis and teachers our generation
has every known, Rabbi Dr David Goldstein. He was a rabbi, teacher,
scholar and pastor – a gentle man whose memory abides
in those who loved and knew him with deep gratitude and thanks.”
She added: “ Julia, I hope you will allow us to pay
tribute to you this evening, to celebrate your wonderful elevation
to the House of Lords, and wish you luck with the Bishops and
Lords among whom you will be seated.”
Baroness Neuberger delivered a stirring and
fascinating lecture about the moral state we are in. She concentrated
on three subjects: those in need of mental health care; prisoners
and ex-offenders; and children in care. Several shocking statistics
were given, emphasising the need for something to be done
to help the most vulnerable. The lecture finished by Baroness
Neuberger delivering a challenge to Liberal Judaism saying
that the movement should take the lead in helping the most
vulnerable. |
