More people than ever converted to become Jewish through Liberal Judaism last year. Eighty-five people completed the Liberal Judaism course, which usually lasts at least 15 months, in 2011, an increase over the 71 completed conversions in 2010 and 58 in 2009. Liberal Judaism chief executive Rabbi Danny Rich said: “My rabbinic colleagues and I are delighted that Liberal Judaism appears to be an attractive way of life for an increasing number of people from very different backgrounds and experiences. “Some of them fall in love with a Jew – which is a good thing – but many come after a long spiritual search seeking a way of life compatible with modern living, which adds beauty and meaning every single day.” Liberal Judaism believes that the path towards conversion to Judaism is one requiring substantial commitment and welcomes all sincere converts. The course is administered and validated centrally by Liberal Judaism on behalf of its Rabbinic Conference, but taught locally with a sponsoring rabbi. Some preliminary reading and experience of Jewish life and worship are essential, as is attendance at Synagogue services before embarking upon the formal course of instruction. The course consists of lessons in the Jewish religion, Jewish history, Jewish literature and the Hebrew language, as well as lots of participation within the community. When the sponsoring rabbi is satisfied that a sufficient basis of Jewish knowledge and experience has been acquired, the candidate is asked to submit two essays and then appears before the Beit Din of Liberal Judaism (with three rabbis sitting). If the rabbis are satisfied with the candidate’s sincerity and knowledge, they sign a certificate indicating their approval, leading to an Admission Ceremony in their home community overseen by the local rabbi.
