Seventeen faith groups and twenty-four religious leaders have written to First Minister Alex Salmond demanding assurances that Scottish Government plans to legalise same-sex marriage will respect the religious freedom. Signatories include the Humanists, Unitarians, Quakers, Liberal Judaism, the Metropolitan Community Church, and the Iona Community, amongst others. As the law stands, faith groups are prohibited from solemnising same-sex marriage regardless of their religious beliefs. The letter, supported by Scottish LGBT charity the Equality Network and Amnesty International, argues that the current ban on same-sex marriage is ‘discriminatory’ and “an unacceptable infringement by the State on our freedom of religion and belief.” Read more
