| Chanukkah packs sent to students and prisoners |
|
Each Chanukkah pack contains a Menorah, candles, a dreidel, gelt, eight pieces of information about the festival and blessings in Hebrew with both English translation and transliteration. They were put together by Liberal Judaism’s university chaplain Rabbi Ariel J Friedlander and student worker Adam Francies – who then posted them to students on the 42 different British campuses served by Liberal Judaism. They were helped by LJ Students mascot, Ari the Lion. Ariel said: “All our packs include something to do, something to eat and something to think about. “Each pack reminds a student of their home, community and connection to Liberal Judaism. We send them out for Chanukkah and Pesach and, this year, plan to add one for Purim.” Liberal Judaism chief executive Rabbi Danny Rich also delivered Chanukkah gifts to HMP Coldingley, near Bisley in Surrey, where he serves as a chaplain to prisoners. Danny said: “At any given moment in England and Wales there are some 200 Jewish prisoners including a number of Israelis. “Although the majority are serving short sentences and for non violent offences and the ratio to the total Jewish remains low, the system does contain Jewish lifers. “All are entitled to the support of a Jewish chaplain and a Happy Chanukkah! |
Liberal Judaism has sent out 200 Chanukkah packs to 30 different cities across the UK and Ireland.
