The next Liberal Judaism Daytimers’ Event takes place on Thursday September 8 at the Montagu Centre from 10.30am until 2.30pm. Led by Rabbi Pete Tobias, the session is titled ‘PROJECT BABYLON – how the Torah came to be written’. Below Rabbi Pete previews the event:
Jerusalem is under siege. The Babylonians are at the gates, trying to break down the walls of the city. The people are starving. False prophets try to convince the people that the city will be saved. Jeremiah knows they are wrong and, though imprisoned by the King of Judah, he co-ordinates a desperate, clandestine effort to gather all the written material that tells of the history, the culture, the laws and the heritage of the people of Israel. This material is contained in several different locations in Jerusalem; Jeremiah himself writes frantically, seeking to explain to the people who will be exiled in Babylon why this has happened and how they must seek to retain their heritage.
Can you assist Jeremiah in his task? Because the challenge is nothing less than the survival of Israelite religion, and your efforts will contribute to the creation of the book that is still the heart of the Jewish religion 2,500 years later: the Torah.
PROJECT BABYLON is a board game, a history lesson about a critical moment in Jewish history, and an opportunity to consider and discuss how and why the Torah came to be written.
