Liberal Judaism’s chief executive Rabbi Danny Rich (metaphorically) toured the BBC Radio studios this weekend, being interviewed for early morning programmes in London, Cambridgeshire, Wiltshire, Norfork, the West Midlands, Newcastle, Guernsey, Sussex and Surrey.
Recording a series of interviews at the BBC Surrey complex on Sunday, Rabbi Rich sought to correct impressions that had been reported in the print media following the recent death of Amy Winehouse. Amy’s funeral was taken by Rabbi Dr Frank Hellner, Emeritus Rabbi to Finchley Progressive Synagogue, with Rabbi Rich leading the first and third nights of shiva at Southgate Progressive Synagogue.
Every presenter asked Danny about Amy’s tattoos and he was able to reassure listeners that the removal of tattoos after death was NOT a requirement, even for a traditional burial.
Rabbi Rich also answered questions on the differences between Liberal and Orthodox Jewish practices, the speed of a Jewish burial and views on organ donation. He then explained the purpose and liturgy of a Jewish funeral and shiva.
Rabbi Rich reminded the audiences that, despite any person’s fame and fortune, death is one of those moments where the mood is one of humility and where fans give way to family.
