Alzheimer’s Society and The Liberal Jewish Synagogue in St. John’s Wood are working together to bring Singing for the Brain™ to Central London for the first time. Singing for the Brain™ is a programme developed by music specialists to help people with memory problems and has been specifically created for people with dementia and their carers to help to sustain mental and psychological well-being. The stimulation and challenge from singing and gentle physical activity makes this more than a sing-along, with results that are both moving and uplifting. This is the first Singing for the Brain™ group Alzheimer's Society has formed jointly with another organisation, and the first initiative of this kind by a synagogue.
Barbara Wiseman, 75, and her husband of 56 years, Peter, share a love of music that is brought to life by the group. Peter
says: ‘This experience is so rewarding. We’re both going home a great deal happier than when we arrived.’ Barbara added, ‘It is wonderful.’ Alzheimer's Society London Area Manager, Maggie Owolade, says: ‘Singing for the Brain™ provides an opportunity to build friendships, gain support and share experiences with people who understand the issues surrounding living with memory problems and dementia. I've seen people who are barely able to speak, be transformed by the music, singing along to tunes from their past as if their old memories are suddenly unlocked. It’s also great fun and uplifting for everyone who takes part.’ Jenny Nathan, Chair of Community Care at The LJS, says: ‘The Liberal Jewish Synagogue has a long and proud tradition of pioneering community projects which benefit both our own synagogue members and the broader local community.
