Prayer for Israel in Time of War - Shabbat Pinchas, 15
July 2006
by Rabbi Mark L. Solomon
Eternal God of the spirits of all flesh, we turn to
You in anguish as we see open war break out between Israel and
her neighbours, and we pray for help and deliverance, courage,
strength and wisdom.
Grant Your succour to Israel’s captured soldiers, that
they may endure their captivity with fortitude. Keep them safe
and let them be brought back in speedy rescue to their families.
Guard Israel’s troops as they go into battle, by land,
sea or air, and preserve Israel’s people in safety as
they endure attacks on their cities and homes.
Grant firmness and wisdom to Israel’s leaders at this
testing time, to discern when and how best to pursue battle
with our inveterate enemies who would destroy us, but also when
to enter the path of negotiation and seek peace with those who
would live in peace with us.
Guide the minds and hands of Israel’s leaders, officers
and soldiers, so that the lives of the innocent may be spared
while the designs of our enemies are brought to nought. Let
the time of bloodshed come to an end swiftly so that justice
and peace may prevail.
Shomer Yisrael, sh’mor sh’erit Yisrael, v’al
yovad Yisrael, ha-om’rim Sh’ma Yisrael.
‘O Guardian of Israel, protect the remnant of Israel,
and let not Israel perish, who proclaim Your unity with “Hear,
O Israel!”’
Amen
