South Bucks Jewish Community
There has been a Jewish community in
the Amersham/Chesham area for many years. In fact, there was
a community during and after the last war as a result of evacuation
from London, and a small synagogue was built in Amersham on
the site where the British Legion Centre now stands.
South Bucks Jewish Community (SBJC) was formally launched
at the beginning of 1990 to provide a focal point for Jewish
activity in Amersham, Chesham, Berkhamsted, Gerrards Cross,
High Wycombe and the surrounding areas. In fact our members
come from as wide afield as Thame, Aylesbury and Rickmansworth. The
Community practices Liberal Judaism within an atmosphere that
is warm and traditional and prides itself on its informality
and friendliness. We like to think of ourselves as one big happy
family and our members span all age groups. Our aim is "to
become the spiritual and communal centre for Liberal Jews, their
families and friends in South Buckinghamshire."
We are proud to have Rabbi Rachel Benjamin, a graduate of the Leo
Baeck College, as our rabbi. We have a dedicated religion school
for the children; run Kabbalat Torah (confirmation) groups for
post Bar/Bat mitzvah youngsters and offer adult education sessions.
There are regular chavurot and many social events ....suppers,
theatre outings, fun afternoons, murder mysteries and more.Further
