Reading Liberal Jewish Community
Reading Liberal Jewish Community is a small progressive community
based in Reading and serving Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey and
South Oxfordshire. The Community is a constituent of Liberal
Judaism.
Shabbat morning services take place on the first and second
Shabbat of the month at the Friends’ Meeting House and
Friday night services are held on the third Friday of the month
in members’ homes. The cheder also meets twice a month.
Although we do not have our own synagogue, the
Quaker Meeting House in Reading make us very welcome, and
we use the building for Shabbat and Festival services.
Despite our size we have a thriving cheder and in 2004 we
are celebrating three Bar/Bat Mitvah and three Kabalat Torah,
as well as five proselyte conversions.
Our spiritual leader is Rabbi Hadassah Davis and she is also
the head of the cheder.
Day to day management of the Community is by
a committee elected from the membership. Faye Cohen is the
chair of the committee.
Our plans for 2005 include a residential weekend retreat and
the start of our community education programme where young and
older members of the community will follow a GCSE Judaism course
together.
