Liberal Judaism - Communities - Congregations

Brighton and Hove Progressive Synagogue

Founded in 1935, Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue is a thriving congregation of over 300 people keen to pursue Judaism in a modern and thoughtful way through a commitment to Liberal Judaism.

Shabbat is celebrated at 8pm on Friday evenings and on the first Friday of every month we hold a Chavurah supper starting at 7pm. Shabbat morning services take place at 11am preceded by 'Fairtrade' coffee/tea and biscuits from 10.30am, and followed by kiddush. On the third Saturday of every month we share a Chavurah lunch. We observe the full calendar of holy days and life-cycle commemorations and celebrations. Religion School for children goes from age 3 to 15/16 and takes place on Shabbat mornings from 10-12.30. There is a two to three year post Bar/Bat Mitzvah programme leading to Kabbalat Torah, and from autumn 2004 KT students will follow the GCSE Religious Studies in Judaism syllabus and have the option to take the exam once they have completed the course. Adult learning courses include daytime and evening Access to Hebrew classes, an Access to Judaism evening programme and Shabbat study before the Shabbat morning service.

Our synagogue undertakes a full social and cultural programme, pastoral support of members, and social action through projects concerned with a variety of issues, including homelessness, refugees and the environment, often linked to festival celebrations.

Visitors receive a warm welcome to share our communal life or to hold conferences here. Disabled access to the building, but not to the toilets.
